Getting To Know The Oohlas
If you're looking for the musical equivalent of a multi-layered wedding cake, than you'd definitely direct your ears, eyes and mouth towards The Oohlas. You'd first direct ears as their sound is layered with tight harmonies, fuzzed instrumentals accompanied by some interesting background noise (as can be heard on The Rapid) and contrast provided by female and male voices. After you are able to open your eyes to see the band, you'll notice that Ollie Stone who plays guitar and is the lead vocalist is absolutely stunning and dresses like a woman would in every hipsters wet dreams. Now assuming that you appreciate good music since you are visiting Daily Eargasm, than I know that it takes much more than a cute singer and snazzy production to give you a true eargasm. That is where the last layer of the cake comes in, which has to do with your mouth. After a few listens to The Oohlas debut album titled Best Stop Pop, your mouth will be plenty busy singing along to the amazing lyrics and poppy choruses.
In what some may consider the glory days of alt rock, no band stood higher than The Pixies. What Kim Deal and Frank Black had (and still kinda do) can be compared to what Ollie Stone, Greg Eklund (former drummer of Everclear who stepped away from the kit) and Mark Eklund have...Wait...Did I just mention 3 vocalists? I sure did, and you can see how the multilayer cake analogy is starting to make a little sense. It'd be a big leap for me to say that The Oohlas resemble anything remotely close to The Pixies, but the similarities are uncanny. Between the pop filled choruses, fuzzed instrumentals and that vocal contrast, I could definitely see fans of The Pixies giving The Oohlas a chance and actually bobbing their heads to it. The fact that there are 3 voices filling up the songs makes it easy for a large fan base to grab hold, since there is something for everyone.
While I liken these cats to The Pixies, I'm not implying that they are a rip off band or riding anybody's coattails. Make no doubt about it, these musicians are definitely offering us all something unique. With the right ears listening and a couple lucky breaks, The Oohlas are a band that we should all hear a lot more of in the near future. So after this long breakdown of who they are, what they stand for and why they ought to change their name to "multi-layered wedding cake", I guess it's time for you to give them a listen:

Halloween Shows In Your Neck Of The Woods
Halloween is coming up, and like most people, I'm pretty convinced that you still have no idea what you'll be doing. Sure you can come out of your Mom's basement for the first time in a year and go bag snatching, or you can watch the Nightmare On Elm Street Marathon on some crappy cable channel with your pimple faced friends, but wouldn't it be much more fun to head to a venue to hear some kick ass music while slamming drinks with members of the opposite sex who cant see how ugly you really are? I thought so!
Check out this list of Halloween shows, and maybe you'll actually have a good time for once! Eve if you can't lose your virginity that night to a naughty schoolgirl or to Fabio with an eye tacked to his chin, you'll still be able to listen to something while being able to oogle at these ladies/guys without them knowing who it is that's staring at them in such a creepy way!
Check out the beats that'll be spun by the Decibel Devils in Sacramento California. You can see them at the Golden Bear on
2326 K St. If you've never heard of these guys, have no fear... They are Team Sleep approved! If you don't know who Team Sleep is, than please leave my site.
Do you have a dark heart that loves heavy music loaded with ghoulish growls? Five Finger Tragedy is playing at Hallowfest at Greystone Tavern Inc. at 1106 Kesler Mill Road in Salem VA. They will be joined by Dark Ruin, Speak Of The Devil and Signal 7, so bring $5 and show up at 6:30 or these bands will eat your soul.
If you're a Grindcore Fan, and in a place called Yuma Arizona, head over to Prison Hill on 2330 Ave. A to check out Secretary with Lions Den. Rumor has it that they'll be dressed up as long haired musicians with corks in their ears and tattoos on their arms.
If you're lucky enough to be in the UK with all kinds of cool indie bands with really wicked accents, you can check out The Peekaboos at Baileys in Doncaster. I don't have the exact time, but if you really want to check them out, just camp out overnight until a fat bouncer lets you in.
Who doesn't like Mindless Self Indulgence? Well I can think of a lot of people who don't, but if you are one of those people that do, and you are in Philly, check them out at the Trocadero on 1003 Arch Street. They'll be joined by Kenny Muhammad, The Human Orchestra, The Giraffes, and Demander.
I could go on and on with all the cool shows that'll be going on, but if you look around, I'm sure you'll find something going on in your neck of the woods...and if not, have fun with that Freddy marathon! Happy Halloween everybody!
P.S. Pick up the new Deftones album, Saturday Night Wrist. There aren't many singles on it if you're into that pop crap, but the album as a collective is pretty cool when you sit back and just zone out.
New York Dolls Headline The 1st Geriatric Punk Tour
After 30 years of sitting on his ass and watching Mick Jagger take all the glory (and the cash of the baby boomers through their midlife crisis), David Johansen decided it'd be a good time to try and mount a comeback with a new band, while still under the name of the New York Dolls. I'm surprised that the king of the old glam punk scene has decided that he's still got the same looks and sounds that he did when he was in his prime...30 years ago. Although most of the band has died (yes...I'm serious), David is taking his original guitarist Syl Sylvian and a bunch of other old dudes on tour in support of their first LP in 3 decades titled One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This. Hell...I'm surprised they were able to even find a venue to play in, now that CBGB's is closing its doors!
If you're interested in checking out a lead singer that looks like a bag lady on crack (of course with a hunch back, in pleather pants and pink nailpolish), be sure to catch them at one of the following stops below. I personally am choosing to wait until the 3 way steel cage match between Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger and David Johansen is shown on Spike TV, but I don't expect you to feel the same.
